To post a message to all the list members, send email to ipmail@ipsailor.com. You can subscribe to the list, or change your existing subscription, in the sections below. The Island Packet Mailing List is a subscription free based mailing list. You can join immediately and have full access to receiving list mail but your questions will be moderated for the first week to make sure you are not a robot. This List is a hands-on endeavor of people committed to Island Packet yachts and the care and feeding of those yachts, their owners and their crews. You will find this is an Island Packet family which you can count on to add value to your boat and the richness of your sailing experience. You are free to sit back in the saloon to watch and listen, or jump right in on any topic that comes across the bow. YOU NEED NOT BE AN ISLAND PACKET YACHTS OWNER TO JOIN THIS LIST. Because this is a family, we all get to know each other pretty well. We look out for and keep up on news of one another. You will find that this could include detailed discussions of where we are sailing or where we plan to sail. More likely, it may include invaluable advice on how to not make the mistakes we have made already (in maintenance, product purchases or sailing misadventures). None of this will come to you anonymously; you will always know who is saying what and where they fit on the Island Packet family tree. First and foremost, we go to great lengths to protect our Island Packet family from cyber-pirates (obnoxious marketers, spammers, phishermen, data miners and e-mail address collectors). By and large, we do this manually. We know who subscribes to the List and we work hard to keep out the cyber-pirates. In order to maintain a secure Island Packet Yacht Owner and guest mailing list therefore you need to know about the very few, but important, rules we have to maintain. In joining keep in mind that some days can produce as many as a dozen or more emails depending on the threads at hand. If this is objectionable then sign up for the Digest mode instead which is a single email each day with all posts within. RULE NUMBER ONE – WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE & YOU SIGN YOUR POSTS. This is critical to our ability to keep out cyber-pirates. It is also critical to our ability to maintain a free, open and credible discussion of issues. We keep RULE NUMBER ONE by following the following steps: 1. After acceptance and when you’re connected to the Subscribe page please enter your Full Name in the Name field box provided, please enter your full name. This is Required. 2. Fill in the six items at the bottom of this document and send it via email to Bruce Gregory, at membersupport@ipsailor.com those items are: (a) [Your Full Name], (b) [Boat Model, Manufacturer & Hull Sequence #], (c) [Boat Name], (d) [Hailing Port], (e) [preferred e-mail address] and (f) [Telephone Number]. This will allow me to add you to our safe list and contact you “off-List” if the need arises. Your information will not be sold, shared, condo-minimized or otherwise mutilated. Your response to these items a thru f will serve as evidence that you have read this entire document and acknowledge your complete acceptance of its content. 3. When posting or responding to a post, please sign off with the following information: A. If you are an IP Owner, your (a) Full Name, (b) Boat Model/Size, (c) Boat Name, and (d) Your Hailing Port; B. If you are not an IP Owner, your (a) Full Name, (b) Boat Model and Manufacturer, (c) Boat Name, and (d) Hailing Port – but, if no boat, let us know your “wannahave boat”; and C. If you are a Dealer, Dealer Employee or other Business, your (a) Full Member Name, and (b) the words “DEALER”, “DEALER EMPLOYEE”, or “MARINE BUSINESS” – but in no event shall you include anything else (Company Names, Headers or Logos are not allowed) unless authorized by the List Administrator . Individuals should also be careful to remove their regular e-mail company or business “signatures” when posting or responding to a post. Not only does this confuse us with information unrelated to your expertise as an Island Packet owner or list contributor, but it also uses up valuable bandwidth on our Servers. This leads to... RULE NUMBER TWO – NO TESTING. Please, NEVER SEND A TEST MESSAGE TO THE LIST and please, NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE A TEST MESSAGE unless you do so directly to the test message offender OFF LIST. This list has an uptime of more than 99.98 percent. If you're not getting list mail it is more likely because the list is quiet and there actually is no mail, please be patient. If you think the list is down and you absolutely must insist on finding out, check with another list member OFF LIST or write to me, Bruce Gregory, List Administrator at membersupport@ipsailor.com. Please keep in mind that one single test message will cause the server to handle an unnecessary two megabytes of data and memory storage in addition to the fact that the errant messages will end up in the archives, FOREVER. And, ... RULE NUMBER THREE – DON’T INCLUDE THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL MESSAGE. When responding to a post, never include the previous message or messages you are responding to, you may include a snippet of the previous message if needed for clarification of your response. Do make sure your reference line bears some relationship to the topic you are discussing. Please consider our mail server's data processing overhead in addition to some sailors underway with limited bandwidth. RULE NUMBER FOUR – Try to keep you messages to a size limit under 80 kilobytes and never include attachments. As to attachments, this will help curtail the insertion of viruses and in the case of Excessive bandwidth, this is the enemy of a discussion list’s Host Server, not to mention that many of our sailor brethren are out to sea and need to keep their data flow to a minimum. Photos and attachments should be sent to IPYOA.com however you need to check with the IPYOA owner/administrator Hayden Cochran with questions pertaining to that. THE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATING THE RULES. Someone must be the enforcer. The risk is from cyber-pirates, that is why the identity rules are paramount. Failure to comply after several warnings may result in membership cancellation. The duration of a first time cancellation is ten (10) days. After ten days if you choose to return you may do so. If your membership is cancelled a second time the duration will be an additional ten (10) days. Keep in mind, that this cancellation is more work for me than it is for you. As a result, a third cancellation may be permanent. Any Warnings or Cancellations will be noticed only to you off list and not announced to the membership. It is not my intention to embarrass anyone, and believe me, I have no desire to cancel anyone’s membership, not to mention it is additional work for me. This is a “serve and protect” function. These rules are really simple and have helped keep the barbarians from the gate, i.e. keeping the unscrupulous and the spammers out of here and keeping your email address and personal information safe. Further Observations. Politics, as it relates to boating, is and shall remain fair game on this list. However, let me be clear that carping about individual politicians or the views of political groups characterized as liberal, conservative, libertarian, etc and others are off limits and have no place here. Financial Support The list survives on the support of its membership. If you find the list of value please make your donation during the month of June when we hold our annual fund drive.
